Questions
- Is this actually offline? Really?
- Yes. Flare uses embedding models that run on your Mac. No API calls to OpenAI or anyone else. The app makes zero network requests. Test it: turn off wifi and search your files.
- Where is my data stored?
- Flare creates a search index in ~/Library/Application Support/Flare. Your original files stay exactly where they are—nothing is copied, moved, or uploaded.
- Do you have analytics or telemetry?
- No. The app has zero telemetry. This website has zero analytics. We don't track page views, we don't collect usage data, we don't want to know what you're searching for.
- What platforms do you support?
- Mac first (Apple Silicon and Intel). Linux is next. Windows depends on demand.
- What about syncing between devices?
- Not yet. If we add sync later, it will be opt-in, end-to-end encrypted, and EU-hosted. But honestly, we're focused on making local search great first.
- How will you make money?
- We're not sure yet. Maybe paid upgrades for future versions, maybe team features, maybe nothing. We're building Flare because we want this tool to exist. The business model will come.
